Kino Lorber has released the official trailer for Re-Creation, a gripping courtroom drama that puts a modern spin on the classic jury deliberation film 12 Angry Men. Co-directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Jim Sheridan and David Merriman, the film takes inspiration from one of cinema's most iconic courtroom stories while turning its attention to a real-life Irish murder mystery. The result is a tense and thought-provoking drama that asks audiences to question what they believe about guilt, innocence and the evidence in between.
At the centre of Re-Creation is a fictional jury tasked with considering a murder that never actually went to trial. Twelve jurors must debate the case of British journalist Ian Bailey, who was convicted in connection with the 1996 murder of French filmmaker and producer Sophie Toscan du Plantier. Rather than simply presenting the facts of the case, the film uses the fictional deliberation to explore how people interpret evidence and how easily assumptions can shape our understanding of guilt and innocence.
The film features Vicky Krieps as Juror #8, a role that immediately recalls the unforgettable character at the heart of 12 Angry Men. She is joined by Jim Sheridan himself, Aidan Gillen, Colm Meaney and John Connors, with Meaney portraying Bailey. As the jury members clash over their interpretations of the case, the film appears to turn the familiar courtroom formula into something darker and more psychologically intriguing.
Directed by Sheridan, known for acclaimed films such as My Left Foot and In the Name of the Father, Re-Creation takes a deliberately unconventional route. There is no traditional courtroom showdown here; instead, the drama unfolds through the arguments, doubts and uncomfortable questions raised inside the jury room. The film's central question is simple but loaded: what if the man everyone believes is guilty might actually be innocent? That premise gives the story plenty of room to explore the grey areas between certainty and doubt.
Re-Creation first premiered at the 2025 Tribeca Film Festival, where it introduced audiences to its fictionalised take on one of Ireland's most closely followed murder cases. Co-written by Sheridan and Merriman and based on an original idea by Sheridan, the film was produced by Fabrizio Maltese and Tina O'Reilly. Rather than receiving a conventional theatrical release, the movie has gone directly to the home-viewing market, giving audiences the opportunity to experience its haunting jury-room mystery from home.
With its 12 Angry Men influence, real-life inspiration and deliberately blurred line between fact and fiction, Re-Creation promises a courtroom experience that is less about delivering easy answers and more about making viewers question their own conclusions. The film is already available on VOD through Kino Lorber, meaning movie fans intrigued by psychological courtroom dramas can dive into the case and decide for themselves: is Ian Bailey guilty, or have we simply been too quick to believe the story we were told?
