Sanjay Dutt has issued a clarification following the attention surrounding his recent appearance on Shekhar Suman’s show Shekhar Tonite. The actor had participated in a satirical segment around Gandhi Jayanti, where he humorously imagined himself as the Prime Minister of India for five minutes and spoke in his iconic Munna Bhai style. After some of his comments went viral and were discussed online, Dutt took to X to explain the context behind his remarks and stressed that there was never any intention to hurt or disrespect anyone.
Sharing a detailed clarification, Sanjay Dutt wrote, "I want to clarify that it has never been my intention to hurt the feelings of any individual, community, or institution, to insult them, or to disrespect them. My comments were made in the context of a scripted conversation, the purpose of which was to engage in lighthearted and humorous dialogue. The sentiment behind it was akin to the style of humor and satire depicted in films like Munnabhai, particularly inspired by the concept of ‘Gandhigiri’, which aimed to convey a message of love, unity, and goodwill. Unfortunately, my words were interpreted differently, detached from that original context."
The clarification comes after Dutt's conversation with Shekhar Suman attracted attention for his comments about the current state of the country. During the interaction, the actor spoke about Indians being large-hearted and hospitable and said that he wished there was more peace in the country. He also expressed his hope that those days would return, adding that he prayed to Shivji for peace. The comments subsequently became a talking point online, with portions of the conversation being circulated beyond the setting of the show.
The actor's appearance also deliberately tapped into the world of Munna Bhai and its Gandhigiri philosophy. While imagining himself as a fictional Prime Minister, Dutt referred to Mahatma Gandhi's famous three monkeys and jokingly suggested the idea of a fourth one—someone who would act when they saw something wrong. The segment was presented in the humorous style associated with his much-loved character, which is why Dutt has now emphasised that the conversation was scripted and intended as satire rather than a serious political statement.
By sharing the clarification, Dutt has attempted to bring the focus back to the larger message behind the segment—love, unity, togetherness and goodwill. His reference to Munnabhai and Gandhigiri was particularly significant, given how strongly the character and the films are associated with using humour to discuss social issues. Rather than presenting his comments as a political address, Dutt has made it clear that they were part of an entertainment format built around humour and satire.
Meanwhile, Shekhar Tonite continues to bring personalities from films, politics, music, sports, business and culture into candid conversations that combine humour and spontaneity. For Sanjay Dutt, the appearance offered an opportunity to revisit the spirit of his most iconic character, while the subsequent clarification has added another chapter to the conversation. The actor, who recently made his Saudi Arabian film debut with 7 Dogs alongside Salman Khan, continues to remain active across different corners of the entertainment industry.
